Guitar Recital by Xianji Liu

Guitar Recital by Xianji Liu album cover Format: CD & Digital download
Label: Naxos
Release date: August 2017
Catalogue no: 8.573813

When Xianji Liu became the first Chinese-born winner of the prestigious Francisco Tárrega International Guitar Competition in 2016, a new star emerged in the world of the classical guitar. Spanning the centuries and crossing the globe from Argentina to Britain, his recital includes some of the most beguiling and evocative pieces ever written for the instrument as well as four transcriptions so idiomatic to the guitar that they sound utterly natural on the six plucked strings. Dreams and Fancies

Dreams and Fancies album cover Format: CD & Digital download
Label: Delphian Records
Release date: July 2017
Catalogue no: DCD34193

Barely half a century ago, the guitar was such a rarity in the concert hall that even an outstanding player like Julian Bream was remarkable as a pioneer as much as for his exceptional technique and musicality. Today, by contrast, the field is richly populated - thanks not only to Bream’s own inspiring example to younger players but also to the vastly increased repertoire, so much of which he also instigated.

Yet even in this new heyday for the instrument, Sean Shibe - whose full album debut here nests among four of those Bream-commissioned works a clutch of Dowland pieces from a previous Elizabethan Golden Age - stands out as a truly uncommon talent. ‘I want to hear his interpretation of Britten’s Nocturnal over and over,’ wrote David Nice in an awed recent concert review. ‘This, for me, is the definitive performance.’ [synopsis by Delphian]

Kyuhee Park Guitar Recital

Kyuhee Park Guitar Recital album cover Format: CD
Label: Naxos
Release date: October 2013
Catalogue no: 8.573225

The brilliant young guitarist Kyuhee Park, winner of the 2010 Agustín Barrios and 2012 Alhambra International Guitar competitions, has crafted a recital that focuses on a sequence of sonatas and a quartet of evocative character pieces. The three Scarlatti sonatas exude dance, lyricism and virtuosity respectively, whilst Anton Diabelli’s engaging Sonata in A, heard in Julian Bream’s arrangement, is one of the relatively few extended guitar works of the Classical period. Lennox Berkeley’s Sonatina is both elegant and complex. After Malats’ popular encore piece Serenata Española and Barrios’ sublime Un Sueño en la Floresta and Chopin-inspired Vals, the recital concludes with Lopez’s richly varied Impresiones y paisajes, inspired by Lorca’s first book. (Synopsis by Naxos)

Julian Bream in Concerto

Julian Bream in Concerto album cover Format: CD
Label: Alto
Release date: February 2012
Catalogue no: ALC1174

Julian Bream does everything, it goes without saying emotional depth is in the second movement of the Arnold, the slow movement - a threnody for Django Reinhardt - most imaginative. This concerto was written for Julian Bream and he plays it magnificently, as do the Melos Ensemble. The recording is first-rate - clear but not at all clinical ... The Giuliani demonstrates Bream's technique and musicianship (Gramophone). Berkeley: Sonatina - an enjoyably amiable piece; Ravel: Pavane - very relaxed account; Roussel: Segovia - a characteristic touch of acerbity; the two sonatas of Cimarosa both very personable (Penguin Guide).

Performed by Julian Bream (guitar)

The Art of Julian Bream

The Art of Julian Bream album cover Format: CD
Label: él Records
Release date: June 2011
Catalogue no: acmem211cd

Composed in 1957, the Sonatina was dedicated to Julian Bream, who gave its first performance at Morley College, London, on March 9 1958. Bream’s 1960 recording has been re-issued by él Records in this collection. This first version on disc shows a strong sense of direction in each of the three movements and a feeling of overall unity. Bream’s playing has exemplary articulation, cantabile melodic line and rhythmic vitality, and the old recording still gives a sense of both sonority and clarity.

Christopher Daly

Performed by Julian Bream (guitar)

The Young Julian Bream

The Young Julian Bream album cover Format: CD & Digital download
Label: Dynamic
Release date: February 2011
Catalogue no: IDI6608

This disc features one of the greatest and distinguished contemporary classical guitarists: Julian Bream. It seems extraordinary that the discography of his youth has been only partially re-mastered on CD. In fact, this is true to such a point that many of his very famous performances are still difficult to find today, such as the Lennox Berkeley Sonatina recorded in 1960. The disc also features Bach's fantastic 'Ciaccona' recorded in 1956, when Bream was just 21 years old, together with a selection of other works recorded in 1960, that are currently very difficult to find. Among them is the famous transcription of Ravel's 'Pavane pour une infante défunte'. (Synopsis by Dynamic Records)

Performed by Julian Bream (guitar)
