2.30pm: Words and Music - Auden and the English Song

This afternoon of events, in association with the Lennox Berkeley Society and the kind cooperation of the patron of the concert, Mr Noriyuki Ida, celebrates the achievements of the prolific W H Auden, considered by many to be one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century, and looks to the rich musical settings of his texts by both Berkeley and his colleague and friend Benjamin Britten.

The celebrated pianist Graham Johnson and Peter Parker, biographer of Christopher Isherwood, discuss Auden's appeal to Berkeley and Britten. With poems read by a student from RADA, and chaired by broadcaster Petroc Trelawny, chairman of the Lennox Berkeley Society. Refreshments will follow at 3.15pm.

Also on the programme is 'On this Island' for soprano or tenor and piano (Op.11), 'Night covers up the rigid land' and 'Cabaret Songs' by Benjamin Britten. Performed by Ruth Jenkins, soprano, Katie Bray, mezzo soprano, Rupert Charlesworth, tenor and William Vann, piano from the Royal Academy of Music.
